Mac McAnally had a surprise waiting for him after he performed with his friend Jimmy Buffett and Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart at the memorial service for legendary broadcaster Walter Cronkite in New York on Wednesday.
Russ Corey, Staff Writer for the Times Daily writes
To top off his day, McAnally was informed that he has been nominated for two Country Music Association Awards, including Musician of the Year for the second year in a row. He won the award in 2008.
In typical laid-back Mac McAnally fashion, he took the news in stride.
"I just probably count myself as the least deserving and most appreciative musician of the year," McAnally said. "I'm equally surprised and honored to be nominated again."

MAC McANALLY "Down by the River"

DC fans got a show last Friday with Michael Armstrong, Doyle Grisham and Nadirah Shakoor at the State Theatre. The Coral Reefers were in town for Buffett's Nissan show.
Mac McAnally defies the stereotype that most behind-the-scenes songwriters can't also perform their own work. His lengthy career (11 solo albums in more than three decades) is often overshadowed by his numerous songwriting credits for Kenny Chesney ("Down the Road"), Alabama ("Old Flame") and Jimmy Buffett. (McAnally is also a member of Buffett's Coral Reefer Band.)
Jonas Beals of the Fredericksburg News reports:
At 52, Mac McAnally is enjoying one of the best years of his career. It's an impressive feat, considering country music tends to rely on fresh talent and McAnally released his first album in 1977.
"This has been an unusually fine year," he said in a recent phone interview. "The ultimate irony is that I played a 'new faces' show in Oklahoma City."
McAnally may be a new face to many country fans, but he is well-known to Nashville insiders and singers who grew up on the music of Jimmy Buffett.
Before his chart-topping duet with Kenny Chesney last year on "Down the Road" (which McAnally penned), he was probably best recognized as a guitarist in Buffett's Coral Reefer Band.
